about

This is a song about crime and punishment. About being in the wrong place at the wrong time. John Doe lived in a bush camp near Serpentine Dam and when a girl was found dead nearby he was the most obvious suspect. Believing himself to be a 'bad' person he had chosen to live alone, away from other people he believed despised him because they could somehow see he was low caste. Whoever did the girl in literally got away with murder simply because John's shame and guilt (for whatever reasons) were sufficient for him to accept his fate, offer no defense, and be hanged for the crime.

lyrics

I'm the quiet man. I never did belong.
Up at Serpentine Dam. That's where i liked to be alone.
I saw them come around. They knew that i was there.
I saw them throw her down, they didn't even care.
I went to where they had been to see what they had done
and i found her lying there beside the water and the gun.
Then the police came and took one look at me,
put me ion chains and put the blame on me.
They put the blame on me. Lord have mercy.
I never did no wrong, anyone could tell.
But someone's got to burn. They want to send me to hell.
I'm the quiet man, i never did belong.
Go on and send me to St Peter so i can finally be at home.
He's got a place for me. Lord have mercy.
